What do you say to yourself when you are afraid? Because most of what you see on the news is fear. Because many times a week I feel like glass ready to teeter off a precipice to shatter on the floor. But if I am the glass then what am I filling myself with? God has given us a great gift in Him: His presence, His joy which is strength. Too many times when I am shackled with fear it’s because I am listening to the wrong voices. We know that in this world, there will be trouble (Jn. 16:33). Focus on what’s good in society, still. I saw a picture circulating on social media this week. It said: “Turn off the news. Love your neighbor.” Because love eclipses fear (1 Jn. 4:18). Love outshines stereotypes. There are many who want to box us up, divide us up, and spit us out. But love. Love lets us see people instead.
Recently, when I found myself teetering, this has been the soundtrack in my head: “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.” –Isaiah 26:3 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” –Romans 8:1-2 “The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” –Psalm 118:6 “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” –1 John 4:18. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”–John 16:33. Take these verses, write them on your hand, your heart, let them shuffle through your mind when you are afraid. A life lived in fear is suffocation. Of course, be smart. And exercise caution. But remember, You’re okay. He loves you. “For You are my Deliverer; under Your wings I rejoice.” –Psalm 63:7 Dance under the shelter of Divine feathers. Dance during the rain; dance to prove you’re not afraid. There is a world full of suffering, yes. We shouldn’t and can’t afford to be oblivious to it. In it,though, He has given us Himself as hope, protection, joy, abundant life, eternal life.
